Plant origin
While it is commonly known as a native of
Madagascar, some sources suggest it is a native of the Carribbean. It is
found in warmer regions throughout the world where it has become very much a
weed.
Size of Plant
Commonly this plant grows to a height of about 24 to 30
inches though recently plant producers have also come up with compact
varieties. Prune the plant regularly to keep it bushy and prevent 'leggy'
growth. Cutting back overgrown and heavy branches will keep the plant in
shape and encourage new growth.
Light
This is an outdoor plant which thrives in full
sunlight.
Water
Since this plant is grown in direct sunlight,
it requires a well drained soil with moderate watering as it is relatively
drought resistant once established. Excercise care when using a hose to water
this herbaceous plant which can be easily damaged by the force of water
from the hose.
Fertilizer
With good sunlight, the periwinkle flowers
freely without the need for heavy fertilizing. Be cautious when using
fertilizer as the flowering will suffer if the soil is too fertile.
Propagation
This plant can be propagated by seeds which
can be found in a pair of slendar pods which contain many seeds or by means of
stem cuttings which root easily.
General
The periwinkle makes an excellent bedding
plant and is also suitable for window boxes and the trailing varieties are
excellent as hanging plants.
Caution
This is a poisonous plant which should be kept away from
young children and pets.
